Code Green: WuBook for “La Forestale”

Contents

Dear WuBookers, when we talk about ecosustainability as applied to the hospitality industry we are mainly referring to architectural solutions and practices that respect the environment and natural resources. Essential aspects, of course.

However, we hardly think about the technology that supports the accommodation facility and also contributes to it being more or less green. This is well known by Don Merlino, the owner of La Forestale Ecolodge, which since 2019 has also chosen WuBook as its technology partner for its unique guarantees in terms of environmental sustainability.

La Forestale: between nature, comfort and technology

Nestled in the unspoiled nature of the Gola del Furlo State Natural Reserve in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino (Italy), the luxury ecolodge La Forestale perfectly combines attention to the environment and 5-star comfort.
This is thanks to a radical renovation that began in 2016 and was completed two years later. In fact, the structure, which began as a Forest Guard barracks – later abandoned – has been completely transformed and now houses three rooms, a suite and an apartment, all revisited according to Don Merlino’s philosophy. “Luxury for me is not ostentation or opulence,” he declares, “but having everything that makes us feel good, in harmony with the environment” – a concept in line with Pierre Rabhi’s “happy sobriety.” This is why the rooms at La Forestale are simply furnished but equipped with every comfort (and a certain taste for design).
Most importantly, they overlook the breathtaking panorama of the Furlo Gorge, with its highlands, the emerald waters of the Candigliano River at a walking distance and the sea not far away. A true oasis of well-being set in the green. Then again, La Forestale really is green outside and inside.

An ecolodge green to the core

The entire construction was designed according to criteria of environmental sustainability and minimization of consumption. A smart building, made of natural materials and advanced technological solutions: “optimized photovoltaics, state-of-the-art heat pump, intelligent energy storage and management, advanced sewage water treatment, electric vehicle charging.” The goal is to achieve energetic self-sufficiency and reduce the carbon footprint as much as possible.
An effort in which guests are also actively participating, invited to follow the good practices of responsible tourism throughout their stay, recycling and using their resources sparingly.

Don Merlino’s choice evidently pays off since, as he told us, he expects to reach “180k in sales by the end of 2024, with only 5 rooms!” Quite an achievement, in which WuBook is also playing its part.

Green coding at the service of hospitality

For Don Merlino, everything has to meet the same eco-friendly conditions, including the technology that allows the facility to promote itself and get bookings. Therefore, when it came to choosing the right PMS for his ecolodge, the choice naturally fell on Zak, WuBook’s management software for hotels

The reason is quite simple: Zak is developed according to the principles of green coding, a method of computer programming that seeks to limit the energy consumption generated by servers when they run an algorithm.

What does this mean in simple terms? That the software that allows Zak to work has a reduced environmental impact because it is optimized in terms of code and operational efficiency

Not only that: always sensitive to environmental issues, the whole company is committed to fostering conscious and sustainable growth by adopting careful solutions even in the daily routine. These include, for example, the shrewd management of internal communications, including emails and chat messages that burden the machines that have to process them. Looking to the offline side, virtuous practices also include waste separation, the use of coffee beans – avoiding non-compostable capsules – and reusable accessories (such as ceramic cups) or ones made of biodegradable materials.

The vicinity between the hotel and WuBook Italy headquarters also played an important role in Don Merlino’s choice of a local partner.

Zak for La Forestale

La Forestale’s achievements over the years are surely due to its ability to attract the right audience and satisfy guests, and – with a location like this – it is not hard to believe. On the other hand, to ensure optimal service in every respect while meeting the high standards of the clientele and the owner, WuBook’s all-in-one PMS is the ideal resource. Suffice it to say that, currently, the ecolodge leverages all major operational features, such as room and rate creation, and check-in and checkout management. Added to these are:

  • the PII package for generating the ISTAT and Alloggiati report for sending Schedules to the Questura, among the main obligations of hotels in Italy;
  • the Finance package, for the management of all accounting;
  • the Booking Engine, for registering direct reservations on the site;
  • the Channel Manager, for selling rooms on online distribution channels.

A comprehensive offering, covering all management needs and ethical requirements of the facility. Icing on the cake? Human (no bots) customer service and always active: “The guys and gals at WuBook Support are a great team!”

Don Merlino’s word.
